UNC roundup: Nov. 25

This weekend was a bit slow because of the Thanksgiving holiday, which is why you’re only getting one of these this weekend. As always, comment in with your own to help us ALL stay current about Chapel Hill happenings.

I’ve also set up a Google Alerts account for us for “UNC” and “University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.” They’re in the links, along with other media outlets.

Cool reads: Nov. 25

Just some quick hits from around the net, and my RSS. (What do you all use? I’m a big fan of Bloglines.)

As always, please comment in or add your own. These are just some things that caught my eye during my morning “surf.”

Still no word on Ty

Yes, Ty Lawson is THAT important, so I’m posting yet again to say: There’s still nothing to say.

UNC-BYU final thoughts

A solid win for us, as we pulled away late to win 73-63, and to win the Las Vegas Invitation title. Ty Lawson did not return from his ankle roll. (And there still is no word on the media front as of noon Sunday.) Some final thoughts:

Nooooooo

This ODU game is going to be a barnburner. But how will our fast-paced game be affected without our sparkplug and point guard Ty Lawson????

Cool reads: Nov. 24

In this regular feature, I’ll share links I find around the ‘Net. I encourage you to comment in or post your own. Some of these will be UNC-related. All of these, I hope, will be interesting. Since so many of us “youngins” are Web-savvy, I expect that you all might have seen some of these. But here’s what caught my eye today …

Tar Heels in Vegas

I know most people wanted to see us take on Louisville in this Las Vegas Invitation championship tonight. It would have been our first ranked opponent of the year – and the Cardinals will be good. But we shouldn’t look past BYU, either. They played Rick Pitino’s squad well, and we’ll have our hands full tonight, for our 10:30 p.m. tip. (SOO much better than the midnight one last night … Don’t these kids go to school?)

UNC digest: Nov. 23

Like “cool reads,” this will be a daily digest, but with a UNC focus. I hope this feature will be like an RSS for Chapel Hill and UNC news. (I’ve linked many of my top news sites in our blogroll and our del.icio.us. Please add your own.)

I’ve also set up a Google Alerts account for us for “UNC” and “University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.” They’re in the links, but I’ll cull this post together daily. Submit your own or comment in with good stuff I’ve missed.

Alumni feature: Nov. 22

This will be a running feature on Tar Nation. Each Thursday, we’ll feature an alumnus who is doing something remarkable. And there’s no shortage of Tar Heels who fit that billing. To nominate someone, comment in to the site or contact Ryan Tuck at tuck.rc@gmail.com. If you’re a wordpress member, link yourself to our blog and post your own features or suggestions. I’d like to expand this feature to the extent possible, potentially spotlighting several alumni each week. (After all, this site is all about you all and your lives.) If you’re doing something cool, or know of someone whose story might be interesting, let us know.

Full disclosure: For this first one I started with someone I know. His name is Feilding Cage and when you read about what he’s doing, I think you’ll know why I started with him.

Ray of hope

I remember well the story of Jason Ray, the 21-year-old Tar Heel mascot who was killed tragically just before last year’s Sweet 16 match-up in East Rutherford, N.J. I didn’t know him personally, but I knew several of his friends and I knew of him. It was one of those gut-wrenchingly tragic stories: A kid with so much to offer, taken seemingly before his time.
